Is this character an OC or AU set in a canon world? If so, which canon?:
I suppose this would count as an AU set in a canon world? And maybe a teensy little bit of OC mixed in? The canon is James Bond - particularly a mixture of Ian Fleming + Craig!Bond (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall).
I say that it's a little of both, but more of an AU, because I plan on playing James when he was young, before he became the MI6 007 we know today. I'm using a combination of Ian Fleming's canon details that he reveals to his readers throughout the novels, particularly in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and You Only Live Twice, and the canon thread of Daniel Craig's Bond movies. My intention is to play him through his young years with every intention of constantly connecting how Craig!Bond became the man he is today. The world is basically the same. The only difference is my own interpretation of these canonical events.
If not, describe their world. This includes things like whether the world has magic or technology, what sort of culture your character comes from, the relative era in which it is set, etc.:
N/A.
Character's background (their past and present, including applicable events in other games you may have played them in):
James was born in West Berlin, Germany on April 13, 1968. He grew up traveling abroad with his parents - Andrew and Monique (nee Delacroix) Bond - and learned to speak German and French quite fluently (along with English, of course). He has a penchant for adapting to his locations quite quickly, if only because sticking out like a sore thumb usually attracts trouble. Due to a lot of his moving around, he tends to be closed off and distant, never revealing more about himself than he needs to, but he is quite the opposite of shy. Charismatic and extroverted, he is quick to make friends ... he just has no intentions of keeping them.
At age 11, after a terrible mountain climbing accident that leaves James an orphan, his sense of familial rooting is, well, uprooted. He finished his early schooling in Pett Bottom, England before he was sent to Eton College at around 12 years old ... only to get kicked out two semesters later for - ah, girl trouble. (Which only worsens as he gets older.) The distance he keeps around himself, as far as revealing personal things about his life, only hardens, but he can be quite the life of the party if he wants to be. Soon after, he was sent to Fettes College in Scotland, where his father went before him. While there, he mingled with the right people who knew other 'right' people. This is where, before leaving at 17, he began to learn of his love of drinking, food, lavish lifestyles, athletics, and girls.
He is currently still under the official guardianship of his aunt, Miss Charmian Bond, who hasn't moved from Pett Bottom, England, though James hasn't seen her since he was 11. They have a ... complicated relationship. At age 16, James is still attending Fettes College and has recently been given the opportunity to travel abroad to Paris with his classmates, which is where he's about to be before the events of Ten Forward.
[More about canonical Bond can befound here! Essentially, this is 'End Game' and the motivation behind younger!Bond.]
Character's personality:
James is charismatic and outgoing, but his sense of sincerity can be lacking. He already has a natural tendency for solitude, but with his constant moving around, and then the death of his parents and his complicated relationship with his aunt, he tends to keep his emotions very tightly controlled and guarded, never revealing personal information about himself. He is mostly calm (with a temper) and appears to have his head on his shoulders, at least where personal matters are concerned.
He can be kind, but it's mostly a 'surface' kind of thing borne out of his slight hero-complex to 'do the right thing'. He is a very quick learner, and has an aptitude for athletics, hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. He has fast instincts and is able to problem-solve under incredible duress (which gets him out of the trouble he wants to get out of).
He also likes the kind of attention that distracts from other types of attention (of the 'getting to know you' persuasion). He enjoys parties, flirting, and surrounding himself with people who don't care to know his past and test the limits of propriety and structure (though he also needs structure and order). He is very much a carpe diem (or YOLO) kind of a guy, preferring not to dwell in the past and this can make him rather reckless sometimes, as he enjoys testing the limits of his own physicality and (sometimes) of others. He's a commitment-phobe, and at his very worst can be quite ruthless, cold and aloof.
Character's skills/abilities/powers:
Fluency in reading, writing, speaking in French, German, English.
Avid climber, diver, swimmer, runner, martial arts (judo).
Excellent hand-eye coordination, reflexes, endurance, spatial awareness, problem solving and detective skills.
Also an excellent strategist, can be quite adept in manipulation (persuasion).
... he's definitely got the makings of a good spy!
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.:
None.
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them?
I love the traditional character of James Bond, and have for nearly my entire life (since I was a kid), but the realism and rawness and sometimes the lack of control in Daniel Craig's Bond has really had a profound effect on me as a writer and fan of the James Bond series. It was something I was thinking of exploring further with Bond as he is, following the events of Skyfall. But then I realized, as I was writing up some information about him, that it is his past that makes up who he is now, and to me that is even more exciting. So, hence a younger Bond. I think it's his environment that makes up a lot of who he is, and the experiences that he goes through in that environment, so having him tossed into an intergalactic spaceship with a whole lot of other people and non-people just seems like too good an opportunity to pass up.
Of course I'm going to be tying in present!Craig!Bond to this young Bond as much as possible because that is who I've mostly based young Bond on, but I am also really looking forward to seeing how the experiences of Ten Forward will also shape the type of 00-spy he will one day be.
What is your character's greatest flaw?
Hmm, I'm not sure if he's got one great flaw when there are so many little ones that make up the interesting and slightly damaged character that he is and will continue to be in future.
He doesn't have a real home anywhere. I think his not having any roots and not having a place to call 'home', was difficult for him in his youth but ends up being an advantageous thing for him in the future, since these things could count as serious weaknesses for spies.
He also has no real sense of responsibility to anyone, since he hasn't got anyone to really look up to. This leads to his being reckless and fosters his 'bad' behaviour. (In the future, I believe his patriotism, which he doesn't really have at 16, is what gives him a sense of serious grounding, and someone to be responsible to. This is part of why he's so patriotic to the Queen and Country. That, and his father-figure, Hannes Oberhauser, who teaches him to ski - and probably a lot of other things. But James is from just before that.)
He is distant. He does not open up emotionally if he can help it. He's lost the only two familiar faces to him in his stream of constant travels abroad, and all the friends he could have made, he left behind - as he always has to leave behind. This, paired with a natural tendency to be on his own makes him a little cold and aloof at times.
Describe your character's family (whether family by blood or by choice). How does your character feel about them? What did your character learn from them?
James was born to Andrew Bond and Monique (nee Delacroix) Bond on April 13, 1968 in West Berlin, Germany. There isn't a terrible amount of canonical detail about Andrew or Monique except that Andrew worked as a Vickers armaments company representative, so they moved around a lot. As a result, James learned a number of languages and was probably quite physically active. His parents were killed in a mountain climbing accident, which I interpret to mean that the family probably often did things like climb and hike whenever they were off adventuring while Andrew worked.
James had a fair relationship with his parents. He loved them; they loved him. They probably all got along and he learned a lot about travel, and the aforementioned activities from them. But I doubt they ever really knew or understood how lonely James could be; and I don't think James ever told them either.
His only living relative that he knows of, and has been mentioned in canon, is his aunt Charmian who lives in Kent, England. He is sent to live with her after the death of his parents when he is 11. She lived alone, and taking James in was probably a big job to handle. He was on the cusp of becoming a teenager, and he had already gone through quite a lot.
What hobbies does your character have?
Hobbies that aren't really 'hobbies' in the traditional sense: a little bit of underage drinking, probably some use of drugs (it's the 70's, so.), and flirting with the ladies!
Well, he also likes to run. A lot. It helps him clear his head. So does hiking and climbing.
Your character wakes up in the middle of the night in panic from a nightmare. What was the nightmare?
Though he has never actually witnessed his parents' deaths, if he were to have a nightmare, it's likely to be related to his parents and the mountain climbing accident. There is likely a lot of ice and snow, and probably blood spilled. Screaming. Imagined conversations between his parents about him. That sort of thing.
